And they're out in full force. Several times a day I have to listen to their commercial on the classical radio station we play in the store. I am told the subways are full of them. Who are they, you ask? Jews for Jesus. The one missionary group on the planet that unabashedly cannot be one thing or another.
The problem is in their inherently deceptive nature. You see the word "Jews" in their title. Their commercials have old Jewish-sounding men arguing. You know the type I mean. The ones who sound like a very old Zero Mostel, speak an English peppered with "oys" and "gevalts," and sound like they grew up eating schmaltz on rye bread. Some of them wear tefillin (phylacteries) and a talit (prayer shawl) when they pray. So, to the untrained eye and ear, they actually appear Jewish. And therein lies the serious issue.
These people are not Jews. They are Christian. And they are trying to convert Jews by dishonest means. Evangelical Christians I can at least respect. They hide nothing. They are open and honest about their efforts to convert us. But Jews for Jesus acts like they are Jewish, in order to lure in unsuspecting Jews.
Usually I don't like to get rant-y in this blog, as it's public, but it's public nature is my precise reason for writing this. I want to warn as many of you out there that read this about the campaign that has been launched in the greater New York area to bring Jews to Jesus.
